September is here and all you snook fans know what that means !!! New snook regulations are 27"- 34". Make sure you pinch the tails to get the longest overall length. Snook will still be in the inlets and start moving back inshore to the flats and bridges. Most bridges have been holding snook during the entire spawn. Live baits like greenies, sardines, pilchards, pinfish and mullet will normally catch the larger ones. By the end of September, the mullet run will be in full swing. Topwater plugs, DOA Baitbusters ,Terrorize and sthingys just outside the bait schools should work great along with your favorite soft rubber baits. Last year about 3 weeks into the mullet run, Hurricane Wilma hit us and really affected the baitfish numbers. I remember fishing the Jensen Bridge just prior to the storm and the bridges were hot. The Jensen Bridge really lights up at night holding tons of bait with snook, trout, jacks and ladyfish tearing them up. More tarpon have been hanging well outside the shadow lines of the 10 cent and quarter bridges. After Wilma, the poor water quality from the releases pushed all the mullet out of the area. Keep your fingers crossed !!!
I have seen a big increase in flounder throughout the entire area. Been catching nice ones in the inlet, bridges, channel edges, grassflats, everywhere. I believe we had 6 flounder over 5 pounds and numerous fish in the 2-3 pound slot. Flounder regs are 12" min. Normally we release flounder under 15". I cannot see killing a fish for 2 flounder Mc Nuggets. Up north they just increased their min to 18" which is kind of high but I would like to see the min in Florida to increase to 15". In a few years you would see bigger and more flounder around. Been catching most of the flounder on shrimp tipped jigs on the bottom. I recently fished the Chavis family down from the Orlando area. This family has been fishing with me the past few years and we decided to hunt tripletail. Did manage a nice 6 pounder along with 7 flounder, jacks, whiting, ladyfish and snapper. A great group and looking forward to seeing them again.
Earlier that week in the inlet we drifted through permit schools catching four one day all running about 7 pounds and 2 permit on another trip. It's great to see them inside the inlet. Normally you need to run along the beaches tracking them down. Also in the inlet, some snapper, jacks, ladyfish and livebaiting for tarpon and snook. Look for the tarpon to pick up around the bridges and seawalls near the end of the month when the mullet are thick. Late September and October's mullet run is fun. Top water action just outside the bait schools can become addictive.
Some grassflat fishing around the house of refuge mainly targeting leaping ladys. I don't believe we actually trout fished the entire month of August. With the mullet run coming I plan on hitting the grass north of the Jensen Causeway. We lucked out with the recent storm Ernesto. The lake was way down to about 12 feet prior to the storm and do not expect additional discharges in the near future. I believe we had less than 1 inch of rain here in Jensen Beach. Update, just fished the 10 cent and inlet this morning(Saturday) and the water was very dark. So much for my discharge prediction. We did go 2 for 3 on snook with 33" and 31".
Decided to leave my hurricane shutters up on my house till October. By me leaving them up, there is NO WAY we will get hit this year!!!
